Wyatt’s Take

  • NYC’s big budget problem is still here, but the mayor wants more taxes on the rich instead of fixing waste.
  • Wall Street’s good year helped narrow the shortfall, but regular folks are still footing the bill.
  • Some lawmakers say higher taxes and more spending are chasing families and jobs out of New York.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani traveled to Albany for the annual “Tin Cup Day,” pushing the state to let him raise taxes on high earners. He claims a tax hike is needed to close what’s left of a $7 billion budget hole, down from $12 billion, thanks partly to increased Wall Street profits.

Mamdani says his team made up the difference by using rainy day funds and hiring more tax auditors instead of cutting public services. He believes the wealthy and successful businesses should “contribute a little more so that everyone can live lives of dignity.” Mamdani wants a 2% income tax hike on those earning over a million dollars and a higher corporate tax, but he needs Albany’s approval first.

He criticized President Trump’s tax cuts, arguing they benefit only the rich, but Republicans fire back that these cuts gave $12 billion a year in relief to New Yorkers and helped job creators invest in local businesses. “Someone earning a million dollars a year can afford to contribute $20,000 more,” Mamdani told lawmakers.

Assembly Minority Leader Ed Ra slammed the mayor’s proposals, blaming rising state spending for lower affordability and a declining quality of life.

“New Yorkers need real financial relief and meaningful quality-of-life improvements—not more of the same failed policies that defined a decade of one-party rule,”

Ra said.

“Nothing is ‘free.’ Someone always pays—and in New York, it’s almost always the taxpayer.”

Despite the push for higher taxes, critics warn that these plans will keep driving residents and jobs out of state.

It is a shame that the people of New York don’t have any business sense. You can’t support thousands of people that don’t make any contribution to community that is supporting the. Socialism is a failure, NO CUUNTRY has successfully functioned with it.
