Hello Middle Americans,

The Justice Department released new clips of the January 6 Capitol riot which show a Trump supporter punching a police officer in the face. Video shows Scott Fairlamb shoving a police officer, who then falls backward. Once he regains his footing and starts to walk away, Fairlamb punches the officer in the face, striking his helmet. Fairlamb is charged with 12 counts including assaulting police and carrying a dangerous weapon into the Capitol.

Former Vice President Mike Pence was heckled by religious conservatives during a recent conference in Florida for his refusal to overturn last year’s election result. A small group of dissenters began shouting things like “traitor!” as Pence began a speech. Attendee Rick Hurley said, “I want to know why Pence is here today. He stabbed Donald Trump in the back and took the coins like Judas.”

A group of 56 House Republicans are urging President Biden to remove Vice President Kamala Harris from her role in the migration crisis. “In the 85 days since the Vice President has been tasked with solving this crisis, she has yet to visit the border and meet with Border Patrol agents, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials and local law enforcement officials,” the lawmakers wrote.

A McDonald’s employee in Louisville, Kentucky quit their job in a unique way. A night manager of the fast food chain hung up a sign on the drive-thru speaker that read: “We are closed because I am quitting and I hate this job.” The picture went viral after a customer snapped a photo and posted it to Twitter the following day.

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops has voted to proceed with a process that could effect the ability of politicians like President Biden to receive Communion. Biden’s election prompted renewed debate over denying communion to Catholic politicians who support abortion rights. “We’ve never had a situation like this where the executive is a Catholic president opposed to the teaching of the church,” said Bishop Liam Cary.

Lastly, activists are perturbed by Biden’s lack of action regarding the death penalty. President Biden hasn’t rescinded Trump-era protocols that enabled federal executions to resume. Last week, his administration asked the Supreme Court to reinstate the Boston Marathon bomber’s original death sentence. “Biden’s lack of action is unconscionable,” said Ashley Kincaid Eve, a lawyer and activist. “This is the easiest campaign promise to keep, and the fact he refuses to keep it … is political cowardice.”

Be well,
