Wyatt’s Take

  • Michigan says its 2024 election was secure.
  • Critics claim the audit missed key areas and came late.
  • Heartland voters wonder if their voices counted for real.

Michigan officials released their audit report almost a year after the 2024 election, claiming the process was

“secure and accurate.”

Some groups and citizens quickly raised doubts about the timing and scope of the state’s review.

The Michigan Bureau of Elections led recounts and audit procedures, saying this work proved the accuracy of election results.

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson praised the

“careful, detailed, and thorough”

checks, with state and local staff working hard to review the outcome.

Still, some watchdogs questioned the report’s function.

One concern was the long delay—nearly a year compared to six months in 2020.

Another group flagged problems with the audit’s coverage, saying some large cities like Detroit and Troy were not included in the sample reviewed.

Patrice Johnson from Michigan Fair Elections Institute said skipping these areas

“raises red flags.”

“An audit should be more than statistically valid, it needs to identify known trouble spots in the state and address them,” said Johnson.

“The situation also points to the importance of careful, human involvement in the process, using human eyes to review the software output for anomalies.”

“Did someone really think it would be okay to skip over the city of Detroit?”

According to Johnson, limited audits

“give voters false assurance.”

Nonetheless, Michigan officials insist their audit was effective.

“All audit results found Michigan’s election system was effective, secure, and accurately tabulated the results of the 2024 General Election,” the state reported.

“The audits also show that clerks performed their duties well and voting machines accurately counted over 5.7 million ballots cast by Michiganders.”

If watchdogs and voters don’t feel certain about their elections, how can anyone trust the system?

Keeping elections transparent matters just as much as counting ballots.

Middle America is paying attention.
