Wyatt’s Take

  • Accusations against Jay Jones now go beyond text messages.
  • Carrie Coyner claims Jones wanted police harmed if immunity ended.
  • Jones denies ever making any threat or hateful comment about law enforcement.

The problems for Democrat attorney general hopeful Jay Jones aren’t just about texts. Virginia Del. Carrie Coyner says Jones pushed her in 2020 about removing police qualified immunity and made troubling comments during a heated policy chat.

“We had a pretty heated conversation about public policy and pain involving qualified immunity,” Coyner said.

She recalled telling Jones, “I believe that people will get killed. Police officers will get killed.” According to Coyner, Jones responded, “Well, maybe if a few of them died, that they would move on, not shooting people, not killing people.” Coyner called that view “insane.”

Coyner makes it clear she believes ending qualified immunity puts both officers and the public at risk. Jones, who pushed for such legislation, offered a statement but refused an interview.

“I did not say this. I have never believed and do not believe that any harm should come to law enforcement, period. Every single day, police officers put their lives on the line to protect our communities, and I am deeply grateful for their service and sacrifice. As Attorney General, I will work hand-in-hand with law enforcement to support their work,” said Jones.

The scandal now tests trust as Jones’ record and words come under more scrutiny. Middle America is watching closely.

Wyatt Matters
