January 1, Imelda Rises Fast Off The U.S. Coast
Wyatt’s Take
- Tropical Depression Nine turned into Tropical Storm Imelda near the Bahamas.
- Forecasters say Imelda could become a hurricane by midweek.
- Hurricane Humberto’s path may steer Imelda away from landfall.
Tropical Storm Imelda formed from a depression on Sunday and now threatens to strengthen into a hurricane off the Southeast coast.
The storm is centered about 370 miles southeast of Cape Canaveral, Florida, tracking north at 7 mph.
Tropical storms pack winds up to 73 mph.
Once Imelda’s winds hit 74 mph, it will be called a hurricane by the Saffir-Simpson scale.
Imelda is expected to move over the central and northwestern Bahamas.
Then it should swing east-northeast away from the U.S. coast during the middle of the week.
The Atlantic has been busy this hurricane season, with other storms like Hurricane Gabrielle and Humberto churning nearby.
The hurricane season runs until November 30, so folks should stay alert.
Keep an eye on the latest to protect your family and property this hurricane season.
