Wyatt’s Take

  • The House voted to ban transgender surgeries and drugs for kids nationwide.
  • Doctors who break the law could face big fines or prison.
  • Only three Democrats voted with most Republicans for the bill.

Lawmakers in the House passed a bill that would outlaw transgender surgeries, puberty blockers, and cross-sex hormones for children across America. Doctors caught giving these treatments to minors could be fined heavily or sent to prison for up to 10 years.

“One of the most serious responsibilities we have is adults and particularly those of us who are elected and hold power when it comes to legislating and making laws is to protect children. Today, the House is delivering on what the American people voted for,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said on the House floor.

Most Republicans supported the bill, along with three Democrats. Four Republicans joined most Democrats in opposing it. The “Protect Children’s Innocence Act” stops doctors from performing genital surgeries or removing healthy breasts from girls who identify as boys.

The bill also blocks doctors from giving boys estrogen or girls testosterone. These drugs can impact fertility, sexual health, and even the heart. Puberty blockers, which would also be banned, can damage bone growth in kids.

Supporters argue the law safeguards vulnerable children from permanent medical risks and regret. Terry Schilling, president of American Principles Project, endorsed the vote.

“Republicans showed today that they are as committed to protecting children as Democrats are to disfiguring them,” he stated. “Bipartisan supermajorities support commonsense protections for at-risk children, and yet only three Democrats had the moral courage to stand up to a multi-billion-dollar industry that profits off of the misery of American kids. Democrats have been captured by an ideology that is as poisonous as it is profitable.”

The measure now moves to the Senate, where similar legislation has stalled before. Meanwhile, over two dozen states have already passed their own restrictions on these procedures for minors.
