January 1, Ford Faces Heat Over China Battery Ties

Wyatt’s Take
- Congress is grilling Ford about working with a Chinese battery company linked to Beijing’s military.
- Lawmakers worry Ford could use this deal to grab U.S. tax breaks, which might go against new rules.
- The focus is on keeping American jobs and money out of risky foreign hands.
Ford’s deal with China’s CATL is back under the microscope after lawmakers raised alarms about national security and taxpayer funds. A House committee wants answers from Ford’s CEO about its business with CATL, a company the Pentagon named as tied to China’s military in 2025.
“Ford’s revised business plan raises important questions about whether the original licensing terms have been updated, expanded, or otherwise altered to accommodate the company’s new focus on energy storage systems and data center markets,” wrote Rep. John Moolenaar.
Moolenaar said Ford’s new projects in Kentucky and Michigan depend on battery technology licensed from CATL. The law passed last year blocks credits if big American companies work too closely with certain foreign outfits, especially those linked to China’s military.
Lawmakers are pressing Ford to explain if it still plans to claim tax credits, what the CATL deal really involves, and what steps it’s taking to make sure American tech and data stay safe.
CATL was put on a Pentagon blacklist in 2025 for military connections, which blocks Pentagon contracts but not other business. Lawmakers have slammed this deal and want to be sure hard-working Americans don’t foot the bill for partnerships that could put our nation at risk.

It’s up to our leaders to put American interests first and demand clear answers.
