January 1, Easter LA Heist: $30 Million Mysteriously Vanishes
Easter Sunday saw a major heist in Los Angeles, with burglars breaking into a money storage facility and making off with an estimated $30 million in cash. This theft marks one of the largest in the city’s history, leaving authorities baffled.
The Los Angeles Times reported the burglary occurred at night in an unnamed facility in the suburb of Sylmar. The criminals appeared to have accessed the building through the roof and breached a safe containing money from local businesses.
The theft was discovered on Monday when the facility’s operators opened the safe. No signs of a break-in were found, and it’s unclear how the burglars bypassed the alarm system. Law enforcement sources revealed that few people knew the safe held such a large sum.
A facility worker told ABC 7, “$30 million in the Valley, gone. How? Why? I’m still trying to process it. Was it an inside job? Was it just one person? Was it a group? You know, there’s a lot of questions.”
The LAPD and the FBI have initiated a joint investigation. In a statement, the agencies said, “The LAPD and the FBI have a joint investigation into an alleged burglary that occurred on Sunday evening, March 31, 2024. No additional information related to the incident is being released.”
Previously, the largest cash heist in L.A.’s history took place in 1997 when burglars stole nearly $19 million from an armored truck facility. Two people were later apprehended and convicted for the robbery. Another heist involving $100 million in jewelry from an armored truck remains unsolved.
