January 1, Denver Defunds Police, Cuts Services to Finance Illegal Immigrant Support
Denver, a Democratic-run sanctuary city, plans to defund its police department to pay for services aimed at illegal immigrants. According to reports, the city will spend $89.9 million on these services, partially funded by cutting approximately $45 million from public programs and services.
The police department will face an $8.4 million reduction, around 1.9% of its total operating budget. Most of the cuts will come from unfilled positions. Denver has become a top destination for incoming migrants per capita, with over 40,000 arriving in 2023 alone, bringing the total migrant population to about 710,000.
Denver’s fire department will also suffer a $2.5 million reduction, or approximately 0.8% of its total operating costs. Half of these reductions will come from vacant positions. Though the city won’t stop recruiting new police officers or firefighters, at least one class will have to take place at the Denver International Airport to save on costs. Additionally, 911 operators will have to be paid differently in order to save the city money.
Democratic Mayor Mike Johnston’s office will lose around $335,155 in funding for the plan, which is about 9.6% of its total operating budget. The Sheriff’s Department will see a 2.2% budget reduction, while the Department of Public Health and Environment will lose 1.9%, the Executive Director of Safety 2.4%, and the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure 3.8%.
Johnston praised the new plan, saying, “After more than a year of facing this crisis together, Denver finally has a sustainable plan for treating our newcomers with dignity while avoiding the worst cuts to city services”. He added, “So many times we were told that we couldn’t be compassionate while still being fiscally responsible. Today is proof that our hardest challenges are still solvable, and that together we are the ones who will solve them.”
Over 15,000 migrants have entered Denver since May 2023 due to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s busing effort. The situation highlights the larger issue of illegal immigration surging under the Biden administration. Customs and Border Protection data indicates that there were approximately 1.6 million migrant encounters at the northern and southern border in fiscal year 2021, over 2 million in fiscal year 2023, and around a million in just the first five months of fiscal year 2024.
Mayor Johnston’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

If cutting police funding to support criminals who have broken the countries immigration laws is considered a ” responsible response” to the flood coming into the city, I would hate to think what the mayor’s idea of stupidity would be! Depriving tax paying citizens the protection they deserve is, I sincerely hope,a sure way to lose yourself a n election in a same world!

The citizens of Denver should let the Mayor & Governor know that putting illegals ahead of legal citizens is NOT acceptable! Chicago is doing the same thing. Only Chicago want large companies to donate taxes to pay for illegals claiming it’s for the homeless!

Thank god I don’t live in Denver, those running that city should be removed, perhaps sent to Mexico or any other country. See how they welcome illegal immigration. I’m sure they would give up their jobs and income so you could have all the freebies you are so willing to give illegals in Denver. Perhaps they have vacancies in the institutions for the mentally challenged!!
