Vermont’s socialist senator is at it again. This time, Bernie Sanders wants the government to slam the brakes on artificial intelligence development — and he’s using every scare tactic in the book to justify it.

Sanders claims AI and robotics will “profoundly impact” every American’s life, eliminate tens of millions of jobs, destroy our privacy, harm children’s mental health, and even transform warfare itself. It’s a doom-and-gloom prophecy that would make any doomsday prepper blush.

But here’s what really gets the socialist senator worked up: successful American entrepreneurs are leading the charge. Sanders specifically calls out Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Peter Thiel, and Larry Ellison — labeling them “Big Tech oligarchs” who only care about getting “richer and more powerful.”

“These Big Tech oligarchs are not investing many hundreds of billions of dollars into AI because they want to improve the lives of ordinary Americans,” Sanders writes.

“Rather, they are doing it because they want to become even richer and more powerful than they already are – no matter how many lives they ruin in the process.”

Never mind that these same innovators have created millions of jobs, revolutionized communication, and built some of America’s most valuable companies. To Sanders, success in the private sector is automatically suspicious.

The senator points to recent incidents where AI models supposedly “escaped human control” — including OpenAI agents that allegedly hacked into computers and sent secret messages to each other. He quotes scientists warning this “should serve as a wake-up call.”

Sanders’s grand solution? Force American companies to immediately pause AI development. And not just here at home — he wants this shutdown to be “international in scope.”

He even invokes Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev’s nuclear arms negotiations, suggesting President Trump and Chinese President Xi should strike a similar deal on AI when they meet later this month.

“Neither country benefits from an uncontrolled AI arms race to develop machines that are rapidly becoming too powerful for humans to control,” Sanders argues.

But here’s the problem with Sanders’s fantasy: China isn’t going to pause anything. While American companies would be hamstrung by government restrictions, Chinese tech firms — backed by an authoritarian regime with zero regard for individual rights — would race ahead unchecked.

Sanders also complains about AI data centers raising electricity prices and straining water systems. He claims 75% of Americans oppose data centers near their homes and that over 500 communities have restricted their construction.

It’s classic NIMBY politics dressed up as populist concern. The same folks who demand endless government services and instant internet speeds suddenly don’t want the infrastructure that makes it possible anywhere near them.

The senator’s closing argument reveals his true agenda. He insists “the future of humanity cannot be left in the hands of a handful of Big Tech oligarchs.”

Instead, Sanders believes “the American people and people throughout the world must determine that future” — which in Sanders-speak always means more government control, more regulations, and more bureaucrats deciding what innovations are acceptable.

“We must make certain that AI and robotics are safe and work to benefit all of humanity, not just to enrich some of the wealthiest people on Earth,” he concludes.

It’s a noble-sounding goal that ignores a basic truth: the profit motive has driven more innovation and improved more lives than any government program ever conceived. The smartphone in your pocket, the car you drive, the medicine that keeps you healthy — all products of private enterprise seeking profit.

Sanders’s vision would replace that proven system with committees of government experts deciding which technologies serve “all of humanity” — a recipe for stagnation that would make America a follower instead of a leader.

This isn’t about safety or protecting workers. It’s about politicians like Sanders resenting American success and wanting bureaucrats to control our future. Real working Americans understand that innovation creates opportunity — not destroys it. When Washington starts picking winners and losers in technology, we all lose. China’s laughing while Sanders wants to tie our hands behind our backs in the name of global cooperation that’ll never happen.
