January 1, Democrat Rep. Lee’s Bold Call: $50 Minimum Wage Sparks Outrage

Published

on

Democrat Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), currently in the race for the late Sen. Diane Feinstein’s U.S. Senate seat, has made a bold call for a $50 minimum wage. This demand was made during a debate on Monday night, where she was asked to defend her stance.

The moderator pointed out that her proposed minimum wage is “seven times the current national minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.” This led to a discussion on the economic sustainability of such a proposal, particularly for small businesses.

In response, Lee stated that she had owned and managed a small business for over a decade, during which she created “hundreds of jobs, benefits, retirement benefits, [and] also health care benefits.” She emphasized the importance of worker productivity and ensuring that employees are paid a living wage, particularly in the Bay Area.

“I know what worker productivity means, and that means that you have to make sure that your employees are taken care of and have a living wage in the Bay Area,” Lee said.

She referenced a recent report from the United Way which suggested that “$127,000 for a family of four is just barely enough to get by.” She also mentioned another survey that identified $104,000 as insufficient for a single person, essentially classifying them as low income “because of the affordability crisis.”

Lee argued that while national minimum wages need to be raised to a living wage — around $20 to $25 — she has to focus on California’s specific needs and affordability factors when calculating this wage.

Fox 40 noted that “a wage of $50 an hour would total $104,000 over the course of a year.”

Lee’s proposal was met with ridicule from critics, including Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who sarcastically asked, “Who not $500 per hour?”

“Okay, why not $100 then? $1,000? Why not just make the minimum wage a billion dollars an hour? Then we’d all be richer than Elon Musk!” quipped Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA.

“Economic illiteracy like Rep. Lee’s has been around for centuries. Every country that adopts it becomes a dystopian nightmare,” Kirk added, as others joined in the criticism.

Lee’s call for a $50 minimum wage comes at a time when inflation is on the rise with no immediate signs of relief, as reported in Breitbart Business Digest.

Why It Matters (op-ed)

Rep. Barbara Lee’s outrageous call for a $50 minimum wage is a prime example of the Democrats’ complete detachment from economic reality. Her proposal would not only cripple small businesses but also exacerbate the inflation crisis our country is facing.

Lee’s outlandish demand is nothing more than political pandering to the far-left, ignoring the disastrous consequences such a policy would have on our economy. It’s high time we focus on realistic solutions that promote growth and opportunity, rather than entertaining the fantasies of the economically illiterate left.

If that old bag has been running a business, then what does she pay her employees? Why doesn’t she pay them $50 an hour for a year and come back and tell us how that worked out for the success of the business.

So what the critics are saying is that no worker or family is worth a living wage. It is hypocritical of all these rich, elite critics. They do not wince when getting gas. They do not wince when buying food that keeps going up or have to live in subpar housing. Neither Charlie Kirk nor Ted Cruz worry about feeding a family because they have plenty of money. It’ just very hypocritical of them. Just how much money do they need? The likes of Gates, Bezos, etc. will never spend what they have. But they oppose ordinary people working for a living making a “living wage”. Pure greed ans hypocrisy.

No one is entitled to a wage or salary. One has to earn it, by doing work. That requires marketable skills. Expanding your skill set, and increasing your knowledge and productivity make you more valuable to an employer, and worthy of a bigger paycheck. Smiley stickers and participation trophies are for young children.

Maybe you should study economics instead of opining on something you know nothing about.

Her problem is that she has not studied history and therefore does not understand the problem. The problem is that both the Republicans and the Democrats have both raised our national debt to $34 trillion dollars and devalued the dollar. Going back to 1969 when I was 31 and married for two years we purchased the top model of the largest builder in the Twin Cities for $29,500 and our annual income was $21,500. So, we bought a very nice newly constructed home for only 134% of our income. Today, we cannot, and most others cannot, buy ANY home for 134% of our annual income. Congress needs to raise taxes and reduce expenditures until the national debt is drastically reduced so that the dollar increases in value and homes once again are affordable.

The real minimum wage remains, as always, zero $/hour.
Less educated youth just entering the job market lack the habits and skills
to have high productivity as employees.
Any enforced min wage that raises what is paid to the least productive workers
raises unemployment, thus preventing the least productive to gain skills by experience.
    Socially positive progress is retarded.

Before they can decide on a ‘living wage’, they first have to decide to create a Dollar that isn’t subject to loosing it’s value due to inflation. What good is increasing the minimum wage if inflation is going to make worth less than the original level?

The government of CA is the reason for the high cost of living there. Stupid high taxes and regulations are the part of the problem. Paying people $50 an hour will just push all companies to raise prices and turn to alternatives, like robotics Robert keep your leftist ideology in CA. You belong there It is of no business of yours what companies and its owners make. Start a company on your own and see how difficult it is to and how difficult it is to keep that company viable when the government does everything it can to stop you. A $50 minimum wage will just turn into a $30 hamburger

$50 an hour! That would mean $30 for a hamburger. $30 for a gallon of gas. We’d still be in the same boat as we are now as all sellers would jack the prices on everything.

Robert should have finished grade school. He might have gained enough skills to earn a higher wage. That’s how it has always been done. Living in the S.F. area I am familiar with the wack job Barbara Lee. She is nothing more than a mouth and obviously has no clue how economics works. That $50.00 wage she proposed would only exacerbate the already high inflation that began when Joe Biden signed away the Keystone Pipeline, causing an instant rise in transportation costs, all of which are passed down to consumers. If you want a high paying job, get a higher education!

id she had businesses. What did she pay her employees? Nothing stopped her from paying $50.00 per hour. She didn’t need the government to mandate her paying $50.00 per hour. What stopped her from paying $50.00 per hour/
