The numbers coming out of Cook County are absolutely staggering. According to the latest data from the Chief Judge’s office, 246 criminal defendants have vanished from Chicago’s electronic monitoring program.

That’s 246 people who were supposed to be tracked 24/7 — just gone. These aren’t parking ticket violators we’re talking about.

The total program monitors 3,048 defendants, which means roughly 8% of criminals in the system have disappeared into thin air. They could be anywhere — your neighborhood, your kids’ school, the grocery store parking lot.

This is what happens when liberal prosecutors and activist judges decide that hardened criminals deserve second chances instead of jail cells. Electronic monitoring was sold to taxpayers as a cost-saving alternative to incarceration.

But what good is saving money if dangerous offenders are roaming free? The program was supposed to give criminals a chance to await trial at home while keeping communities safe.
