Wyatt’s Take

  • Newt Gingrich says a hidden DHS funding provision could block money from being used for ICE operations.
  • He argues Senate Republicans should not have agreed to language that weakens immigration enforcement.
  • The funding fight comes as the Senate also failed to advance the SAVE Act.

Newt Gingrich is sounding the alarm over a hidden provision in the latest DHS funding bill that handicaps immigration enforcement.

He says the language appears to block money from being used for ICE operations.

The former House Speaker did not hold back during a recent interview while discussing the legislative failure.

"What it says is no money in this bill can be spent on ICE."

Gingrich noted that he has not received a clear explanation from Senate leadership on why they tolerated this specific section.

He mentioned that legal experts are still scratching their heads over how this made it into the package.

"I don’t fully understand why the Republicans would have tolerated that section, and it’s very clear, it’s very specific."

This comes as the Senate also failed to pass the SAVE Act, which would have required proof of citizenship to register to vote.

Some lawmakers were seen leaving Washington before the work on voter integrity was finished.

Representative Randy Fine criticized the lack of urgency from Senate leadership as they headed out of town.

He expressed frustration that crucial security and voting bills were left behind while leaders used private escorts to exit the capital.
