A fourteen-year-old girl in India made a bold choice to reject an arranged marriage, walking away from her family’s wealthy home.
She ended up leaving for America and never spoke to her father again.
Zarna Garg told her story to Fox News, describing how her father’s ultimatum forced her to pick between family and her own path.
“My dad was like, ‘Listen, if you don’t want to get married, you can’t live here.’ He thought he would scare me into submission and I thought he would come around. See, I thought, he’s riddled with grief because his wife has just died, my mom. And that he’s going to come around and this is all going to be okay. We were basically in a face-off,” she said.
Zarna’s plan to stay with friends turned into two years of uncertainty, constantly searching for a place to sleep.
“I showed up at my friend’s house and after a day, my friend’s mom is like, ‘You should go back.’ And that’s when it hit me. I was like, ‘Oh my God, I have nowhere to go.’ And it was almost two years of, ‘Where can I go tonight?’” she added.
She kept the humor going through hardship, making people laugh so they’d let her stay at their homes.
Garg tried to return to her family but still faced rejection. She eventually secured a visa and built a new life in America, earning two college degrees.
Her father never spoke to her again, even denying her the chance to attend his funeral.
Yet, Garg stressed she believed her father meant well, saying his traditions were different than what folks in America might understand.
“I know it feels shocking here in America, but what he remembers is that I walked away from a guaranteed life that he was going to set up for me. He wasn’t a bad guy, to be clear. He wasn’t. He came from a good place. I have three siblings who were arranged. My sister was arranged and is deliriously happy and successful,” Garg said.
Stories like this remind us that freedom comes with a cost many never see from the outside. Stay tuned for more stories that cut straight to the heart of what matters to hardworking Americans.
