January 1, Clumsy Arsonist’s Flaming Blunder: Suspect’s Attempt to Torch Florida Church Backfires

In a bizarre turn of events that might easily be mistaken for a scene from a slapstick comedy, a man in Florida almost immolated himself in a botched attempt to commit arson against a church, a surveillance video has revealed.

The incident unfolded in the wee hours of August 14. Broward County’s emergency responders raced to a reported fire at the Power Outreach Ministry church situated in Oakland Park, Florida, a short distance north of Fort Lauderdale.

But as the Oakland Park Fire Rescue team, in collaboration with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputies, approached the scene, the signs started pointing unmistakably towards a case of deliberate arson.

The sheriff’s office delineated the situation, stating, “After extinguishing the fire, firefighters alerted deputies to evidence that the fire at the Power Outreach Ministry may have been intentionally set. The Oakland Park City Fire Marshal responded to the scene and determined the fire to be arson.”

Thanks to the church’s vigilant security measures, the parking lot surveillance camera captured the antics of the suspect in question. The footage displayed a tall, slender man casually trespassing onto the church premises, armed with what looked like a can of gasoline.

Demonstrating little regard for the sanctity of the place, the suspect audaciously poured the can’s contents onto a portion of the church’s landscaping.

In the act’s subsequent unfolding, the man lit not one, but two fires, apparently using paper towels as the igniting medium. Clearly unprepared for the vigorous flames that ensued, the suspect was caught off-guard by the first fire, leaping sideways in a bid to spare himself from the unexpected inferno.

Undeterred by his initial misadventure, the man proceeded a few steps further and lit another fire. This one, however, had a twist in store for the arsonist. Within moments, a pool of blue flames encircled the suspect’s feet, threatening to set his entire lower half ablaze.

A hasty retreat ensued, with the suspect sprinting away, an action that fortunately snuffed out the threatening flames, as captured in the video.

Though he narrowly averted causing harm to himself, the church wasn’t as lucky. Reports have indicated that the fire resulted in damages approximating $1,000. As of now, this inept arsonist is still on the run.

Authorities are appealing to the public for assistance in this case. Anyone with pertinent information is encouraged to get in touch with BSO Detective Robert O’Dor at 954-321-4849, relay a tip via the SaferWatch app, or anonymously through Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477) or on their website at browardcrimestoppers.org.

They don’t need to post pictures and video anymore. I just assume the suspect is black unless stated otherwise.
