January 1, Chargers Break Eagles’ Hearts With Final OT Pick
Wyatt’s Take

- Middle America sees another gritty NFL battle with playoff stakes.
The Los Angeles Chargers grabbed a much-needed 22-19 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in overtime after intercepting Jalen Hurts near the goal line. This victory boosts the Chargers to a 9-4 record and puts them in a stronger playoff spot, while the Eagles slip to 8-5 but hang onto their lead in the NFC East.
Hurts had a tough night, turning the ball over five times, with four interceptions and a critical pick in overtime that sealed the Eagles’ fate. The last turnover happened when Hurts tried to find Jahan Dotson, but Cam Hart tipped the ball and Tony Jefferson came up with the game-ending interception.
The game wasn’t short on sloppy moments from both teams, but the Chargers’ defense made the final difference. Their defense calmly forced takeaways at key moments all through the night.
Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, still dealing with a recently repaired left hand, was picked off once and also lost a fumble near the half. Even so, he led his team on the ground with 66 rushing yards and used his legs for a clutch drive to force overtime, setting up Cameron Dicker for key field goals—five made out of five, including a 54-yarder in overtime for the lead.
Philadelphia’s defense put up a fight, with Jalyx Hunt sacking Herbert 2.5 times and a total of seven sacks on the night. The Eagles’ offense made some noise: A.J. Brown caught six passes for 100 yards, Dallas Goedert added 78 more, and Saquon Barkley carried it 20 times for 122 yards plus a fourth-quarter touchdown.
Hurts finished 21-of-40 for 240 yards, with no touchdowns after a scoring throw was called back for holding. He also lost a fumble after an interception, with the Chargers recovering both the pick and the loose ball.
The Eagles hope to snap their three-game losing streak next week at home against the Las Vegas Raiders. The Chargers will keep pushing for the playoffs with a big test coming up against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Heartland fans know, when the game’s on the line, grit and hustle decide who wins.
