Wyatt’s Take

  • CBS delayed a ’60 Minutes’ segment about deported Venezuelans.
  • The White House’s call to highlight Angel Parent stories was left out.
  • Insider accusations say politics, not facts, drove the decision.

CBS pulled a planned ’60 Minutes’ report about Venezuelan deportees sent to a tough El Salvador prison. The White House had asked CBS to use the segment to put the spotlight on Angel Parents, Americans whose children were killed by illegal immigrants, but their statement was left out.

A White House spokesperson said, according to the New York Times, “60 Minutes should spend their time and energy amplifying the stories of Angel Parents, whose innocent American children have tragically been murdered by vicious illegal aliens that President Trump are [sic] removing from the country.”

Hours before the episode was set to air, CBS said it needed more reporting. The delay came after CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss decided the story wasn’t ready, even though CBS lawyers and standards teams had approved it.

Sharyn Alfonsi, the reporter behind the story, accused Weiss of making the call for political reasons. Alfonsi said, “Our story was screened five times and cleared by both CBS attorneys and Standards and Practices… Pulling it now, after every rigorous internal check has been met, is not an editorial decision, it is a political one.” She warned that letting the administration’s refusal to join in shut down stories would hand them a “kill switch” for inconvenient news.

The segment did show a brief quote from White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt from March, calling the deportees “heinous monsters, rapists, murderers, kidnappers, sexual assaulters, predators, who have no right to be in this country and they must be held accountable.”

Most of the administration’s comments, including from State and Homeland Security, were not included in the broadcast. The story was later posted online and aired in Canada but didn’t show any full interviews with Trump officials.

This all happened after President Trump deported 252 Venezuelan migrants, accused of gang ties, to El Salvador’s high-security CECOT prison using a wartime law.

Disagreements inside CBS over whether politics played a role have sparked a public argument about media bias and what stories get heard in American homes.

Don’t let the big networks make the decisions for you—keep questioning what you’re being told and demand transparency.

Wyatt Matters
