January 1, California Republicans Slam Prop 50 Power Grab

Wyatt’s Take

  • California approved Prop 50, which opens more congressional seats for Democrats.
  • Republican congressmen call the move unfair and plan to fight back in 2026.
  • State officials urge patience as ballots are finalized through December.

California voters approved Proposition 50 with nearly 64% in favor.

This measure adds five new congressional seats for Democrats, aiming to offset new Republican districts in Texas.

Rep. Doug LaMalfa shared his frustration.

“Our constitution lost out to a pile of money and shameful deception, in one of the most blatant power grabs I’ve ever seen. Should these results stick, the imbalance in California between rural and urban voices will get that much worse, essentially silencing our portion of the state.”

Election results will not be certified until December 12.

Secretary of State Shirley Weber told voters to be patient, explaining every ballot must be counted and verified, as required by law.

“On Election Night, we will have a good picture of the outcome of this ballot measure, but it will take weeks to know the final result. This is normal. We have a process that by law ensures both voting rights and the integrity of elections, so I would call on all Californians to be patient.”

Assembly Elections Chair Gail Pellerin said many ballots are still pending.

She added that new maps will take effect for the next three election cycles.

Most at-risk Republican House members expressed disappointment but vowed to run again.

Rep. Kevin Kiley spoke out.

“While I believe the conduct of this election, from the rushed timing to the suspension of voter protections, fell well short of the ideals we ought to strive for in our democratic process, nevertheless, the people of California have spoken.”

Kiley warned that this redistricting battle sets off a nationwide race.

“With California’s new gerrymander, the redistricting arms race has no end in sight. North Carolina, Missouri, Indiana for Republicans. Illinois, Maryland, Virginia for Democrats, and to what end? It’s a race to the bottom that degrades democracy everywhere.”

Rep. Darrell Issa called the election hard to watch, noting it pitted neighbor against neighbor.

“I’m not going anywhere. I’ll continue to represent the people of California — regardless of their party or where they live.”

Rep. Ken Calvert said he will run again, telling voters he’s a proven conservative ready for the fight.

“I’ve lived here my entire life and already represent the majority of this district in Congress. I look forward to helping President Trump to deliver lower taxes, to bring down housing costs, secure our borders, make our streets safe and bring real results for the families of this district for years to come.”

Rep. David Valadao joined others in calling the results a setback for democracy.

“The results of California’s special election are a disappointing setback for fairness and democracy in our state. No political party should have the authority to rig the rules to keep themselves in power, and this is a loss for the very principles of representation a functioning democracy relies on.”

Prop 50’s passage means the battle over fair representation is far from over.

Prop 50 is a scam by the Democratic Party and shouldn’t be allowed! No way did this ridiculous act pass legally! Republicans were on top of this Democrat scam to obtain votes!
