Australia’s leaders are pushing for even stricter gun control after a mass shooting struck a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach. This weekend’s attack left 15 people dead, shaking families and the nation.

  • Prime Minister Anthony Albanese vowed to tighten already tough gun laws and review firearm licenses.
  • The attack targeted Jewish Australians celebrating Hanukkah, with two gunmen opening fire on the crowd.
  • A local shop owner, Ahmed al Ahmed, was hailed for tackling one of the shooters and helping others flee to safety.

On Sunday, thousands gathered on Bondi Beach to mark the start of Hanukkah when the violence erupted. Both shooters, a father and son, unleashed gunfire, killing people ranging from ages 10 to 87, according to authorities.

Police shot both attackers; the son survived and is in the hospital, while the father died at the scene.

Australia responded swiftly, with Prime Minister Albanese declaring,

“The government is prepared to take whatever action is necessary.”

Proposed actions include limiting how many firearms a person can hold, setting citizenship as a requirement for licensing, reviewing ongoing licenses, and reducing what types of guns can be owned legally.

Albanese stated,

“If we need to toughen these up, if there’s anything we can do, I’m certainly up for it.”

The attack stunned the nation, as Australia has enforced some of the world’s strictest gun laws since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre. At least 38 wounded victims were treated in hospitals.

Among them, Ahmed al Ahmed, a fruit shop owner originally from Syria, tackled one of the gunmen before he was shot in the shoulder.

His mother told reporters,

“My son has always been brave.”

“He helps people.”

“He’s like that.”

Ahmed’s quick action is credited with saving lives and stopping further bloodshed.

The sadness around Bondi Beach was met by tributes and prayers for all those lost.
