Attack on Cop Caught on Video [Video]

The video shows an unprovoked attack on an NYPD officer by a man named Jose Garcia, who allegedly hit her over the head with a bottle. Garcia’s father stated in an interview that his son suffers from mental illness and had been diagnosed with schizophrenia since he was 12 years old. Garcia reportedly told police that “God told him to do this” and that he had seen “people in his house and no one did anything.” The father admitted that his son liked to drink and had been prescribed medication, but was not taking it. The injured officer was conducting smoke shop inspections at the time of the attack, which was caught on camera by chance. The suspect has a history of arrests related to his mental health issues.

Schizophrenia is a severe and chronic mental disorder that affects the way a person thinks, feels, and behaves. It is a complex illness that often requires lifelong treatment and care. I don’t want anyone to mistake this as me excusing this man’s vicious attack on an officer, it certainly isn’t. I do think it is important for us as Americans to recognize that some people don’t need jail, they need to be institutionalized and treated. Is this man a criminal, yes. He committed a crime. I don’t want to see the country I love be taken over by criminals or lunatics. If someone is mentally ill they need treatment before their condition effects other individuals safety. That father had a responsibility for his boy. You can make excuses all you want, that’s easy. But taking responsibility is tough. I’ll be praying for that officer. Thanks for reading.
