January 1, Al Green’s Future in Congress at Risk, GOP Lawmaker Pushes for Expulsion Vote

Rep. Al Green, a Democrat from Texas, got in trouble this week for interrupting President Trump’s big speech to Congress. Republicans in the House have had enough and might even try to kick him out for good.
There’s a video going around showing Rep. Tim Burchett, a Republican from Tennessee, talking about it. He said maybe it’s time to consider kicking Green out of the House. “We need to have some order. Al might be the one we need to start with,” Burchett said.
Now, kicking someone out of the House isn’t easy. It takes a lot of votes—like two-thirds of everyone in the House. It’s only happened a few times in history. The last time was not long ago, in 2023, when George Santos, a Republican from New York, got kicked out because he was in big legal trouble.
But some folks think it’s not likely Rep. Green will get booted. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, another Democrat, says Republicans don’t have the votes to do it. He says, “They can’t kick out members. That will never happen.”
On Thursday, the House, led by Republicans, decided to officially scold Green for his behavior during Trump’s speech. Even some Democrats agreed with this action. The vote was 224 in favor, 198 against, and 2 just didn’t vote on it.
Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, a Democrat, said that when someone breaks the rules, like Green did, they should expect to face the consequences. “We need to respect the President’s office and stop with the drama,” she added.
When Green was called out in the House chamber for his censure, things got noisy again. Some Democrats stood with Green and started singing “We Shall Overcome,” causing chaos. The Speaker had to bang the gavel and call for order, eventually putting the House on break.
Rep. Tim Burchett joked on social media, “When I’m censured I’m singing Freebird,” referring to the famous rock song.
Now there’s talk in the House about taking more actions against Green. Rep. Andy Ogles from Tennessee suggested stripping committee roles from those who joined Green in the song. The conservative group, House Freedom Caucus, also wants to take away Green’s committee assignments.
After the censure, Green gave a long speech in the House chamber. He said he’s proud to be a Democrat and isn’t afraid. But Republicans think it’s time for some serious consequences to keep things in line.
Wyatt Matters!
Congress needs to be a place where everyone can share their ideas, even if not everyone agrees. When people disagree, it should be done with respect and without shouting matches. Interrupting speeches and causing commotion doesn’t help anyone understand each other better. Sure, sometimes people feel really strongly about something and might want to shout it out, but it’s important to remember that there are rules for a reason. Everyone should have a chance to speak and listen in an orderly way.
If someone breaks the rules, like interrupting a president’s speech, they should expect some kind of consequences. But it’s also important to think carefully about what is fair. Kicking someone out of their job in Congress is a really big deal and only happens in very serious situations. This isn’t just about one person or one party; it’s about setting a good example for how leaders should act and make sure that everyone in the country is represented fairly.
Members of Congress should focus on working together and showing respect for each other, even when they don’t agree. If people in Congress keep fighting and causing chaos, it doesn’t set a good example for others to follow. Instead, leaders should inspire with their actions and find solutions to problems that matter to everyone in the country. This is how Congress can truly serve the people and make a difference.

Green should absolutely be removed for his egregious show of disrespect not only for the President of the United States of America, but also for Congress itself. He should be removed, and every single person who held up a sign should be censured. That behavior was childish and disruptive. There are proper avenues for members of Congress to voice their opinions, but the Democrats’ infantile behavior during President Trump’s address made our entire government look bad.

Make an example out of him he did it on purpose to start with. Knowing this he should have more than just the regular punishment he needs to be made an example to let the rest know this kind of garbage will not be tolerated anymore.

Why are you using a picture of AL Green the musician on a story about AL Green the politician. They look zero alike.

If Congress wants anyone to have any respect for them, Green needs to go. Allowing this kind of behavior destroys all reason to hope for any dignity, class, quality, intelligent discourse, or sensible actions. They can be disrespected as a bunch of clowns, like Green, or remove the rotten apple from their barrel. Failure to do that is a form of approval for such crude action.
