Wyatt’s Take

  • China just took over a secret American air base from the Vietnam War days
  • Another airfield in Southeast Asia now flies the Chinese flag
  • Local farmers are losing their land while Beijing builds its military reach

China has opened a new military air base on land that once belonged to the United States. The airfield sits in northern Laos and was used by the CIA during the Vietnam War.

The China-Laos Joint Logistics Airbase began operations in late September. A 1.2-mile runway now serves Chinese military planes and vehicles.

Local families who lived near the old runway say the Chinese government simply took their property. They report no warning and no payment for the land.

“We used to farm rice where those planes now sit,” one resident told reporters. “Now we are told to leave and never come back.”

The base sits less than 200 miles from the Chinese border. Military experts say it gives Beijing a clear path to move troops and supplies deeper into Southeast Asia.

American officials have stayed quiet about the development. The State Department offered no comment when asked about the loss of the historic airfield.

China claims the facility is only for joint training with Laos. Satellite photos show eight small aircraft and at least 16 military vehicles already on site.

“This is about protecting trade routes,” a Chinese defense spokesman said. “Nothing more.”

Laotian officials signed the land deal with Beijing two years ago. Construction crews worked around the clock to finish the runway and hangars.

Defense analysts warn that the airfield could support fighter jets or drones within months. The location allows China to reach Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia with ease.

Wyatt Matters

Middle America understands that strong borders and steady allies matter. When old American ground falls to foreign powers without a fight, working families see the cost in higher gas prices, lost factory jobs, and growing uncertainty about who really runs the world.
