January 1, Radical Students Force University to Deploy ICE Warning System Months Early

Wyatt’s Take

  • University of Oregon caved to far-left student activists demanding an ICE alert system months before it was legally required — proving once again that radical campus groups control higher education
  • Democratic Socialists and anti-ICE coalitions threw a tantrum and university administrators immediately bent the knee, rushing implementation by late April when the state deadline wasn’t until September
  • This is the same university that just started handing out abortion pills on campus after student pressure — a pattern of woke activists running the show while taxpayers foot the bill

The University of Oregon just proved that radical student activists call the shots on American campuses. After far-left groups demanded it, university officials rushed to implement an ICE alert system months ahead of schedule.

An April 30 email from Associate Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students Jimmy Howard announced that the university’s campus-wide emergency alert system would now be used to warn students about any nearby Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity. The system became operational Wednesday.

Here’s the kicker: Oregon law gave universities until the end of September to set up these systems. But that wasn’t fast enough for the Democratic Socialists of America chapter and the University of Oregon Anti-ICE Coalition. They delivered a petition demanding immediate action, and university brass folded like a cheap suit.

The rush came after Oregon’s Democratic Governor Tina Kotek signed H.B. 4079 into law on April 9. The bill requires public schools and colleges to notify students of federal immigration presence on campus. The legislature that passed it? Controlled entirely by Democrats in both chambers.

Just one day after the governor’s signature, student groups stormed the Office of the President with their demands. Within weeks, the university announced full compliance — five months ahead of the legal deadline.

“As requested by our campus community and required by Oregon House Bill 4079, we are implementing a notification system in the event of immigration enforcement activity on campus,” Howard’s email stated.

When pressed about why they were moving so fast, university officials claimed they already use emergency alerts for “certain law enforcement activity” and other campus concerns. But the timing tells a different story — this was about appeasing radical activists, not following established procedures.

“The University of Oregon follows all federal and state laws,” the university said in a statement. “In compliance with the new state law, the University of Oregon created the required policy, which clarifies the conditions that would warrant such notice and the method of communication.”

Student organizers openly admitted their goal was protecting people from federal immigration enforcement. One activist told The Daily Emerald that waiting until September “leaves a pretty big gap in protection for students.”

“We’ve seen UO’s lack of response and its insistence that we be compliant with the federal administration. And we don’t agree with it. We think it’s unsafe,” another student organizer said.

“We think that we’re better than that, we have the resources to protect ourselves. So we’re here to make a point about that and keep the pressure up.”

The new system requires verification from the Office of the General Counsel, university police, and Safety and Risk Services before sending alerts. But make no mistake — this is about helping students avoid ICE, not keeping them informed about routine campus activities.

This isn’t the first time University of Oregon administrators have surrendered to student demands. In March, the school announced it would begin offering abortion pills on campus starting this fall — once again, following pressure from left-wing student groups.

The Daily Emerald reported that the DSA chapter “has been campaigning for campus abortion access for the past three years” and made it a centerpiece of their activism since last fall.

The pattern is clear: radical students make demands, spineless administrators comply, and American taxpayers subsidize the whole circus through federal loans and state funding.

Wyatt Matters

This is what happens when we let the inmates run the asylum. Universities are supposed to educate students and prepare them for productive citizenship — not help them obstruct federal law enforcement. Working families across America send their kids to college hoping they’ll learn critical thinking and marketable skills. Instead, they’re being radicalized by Democratic Socialists and taught that federal immigration laws don’t matter. These universities take billions in taxpayer money while openly working against our nation’s interests. It’s time parents and voters demand accountability from these institutions.
