January 1, Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Hands Dolphins First Win With Clock Blunder

Wyatt’s Take
- Another sloppy loss puts the Jets coach on the hot seat once again
- Glenn admitted he should have used timeouts but let the Dolphins run out the clock
- Working-class fans in New York deserve better leadership on the sidelines
The Jets fell to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday in a game that exposed serious coaching mistakes. Aaron Glenn stood on the sideline and let the clock run during a critical Dolphins drive before halftime.
The Dolphins had been winless all season and had never led a game until they faced New York. Against Glenn’s team they looked like a different squad.
“When it comes to this game, highly disappointed,” Glenn said after the loss. “Disappointed in myself, first and foremost.”
The Jets coach admitted he made the wrong call by saving his timeouts. The Dolphins marched 59 yards with the clock running and scored just before the break.
“Man, we felt like we were going to stop them,” Glenn explained. “And maybe we should have called our timeouts to get it back, but at that point, we just felt like we were going to stop them and be able to get the ball back.”
“That’s something that we should have done is use our timeouts.”
Glenn’s explanation only made the mistake more obvious. Using the timeouts would have given the Jets the ball back with time on the clock if they had stopped Miami. Instead they got the ball back with six seconds left and simply took a knee.
The Jets managed a late rally but still lost 28-25. The missed field goal opportunity in the first half proved to be the difference.
New York sits at 2-5 and Glenn’s future looks shaky. Owner Woody Johnson has stayed silent while the losses pile up. Glenn’s teams have been outscored 107-6 before halftime over his 24 games as head coach.
“We all have to get better, from coaching to playing to everything that we’re doing, we have to get better,” Glenn said. “… We know what’s going to happen from the outside in, we accept that, and it is what it is.”
“This is a time where our guys, we’ve got to lock arms to make sure that everything that we get as far as energy and connection is going to be built from within, and we understand that.”
“But we’ve got to play better, and our fans deserve better than that, and that starts with me.”
Wyatt Matters
Heartland fans know what real leadership looks like. When coaches make excuses instead of owning their mistakes, the team suffers and loyal supporters pay the price with another wasted season.
