January 1, Far-Left NYC Lawmaker’s Tax Scheme COLLAPSES After He Skips Own Hearing

Wyatt’s Take

  • Socialist New York assemblyman pushing massive property tax couldn’t be bothered to show up and defend his own bill at hearing
  • Witness after witness tore apart the scheme that would punish second-home owners while critics say it does nothing to fix the real housing crisis
  • Classic leftist playbook — grandstand with radical proposals, then vanish when it’s time to answer tough questions from regular people

A far-left New York City assemblyman who’s been making noise about slapping a massive new tax on second homes didn’t even have the guts to show up at his own hearing. Zohran Mamdani, a self-described Democratic Socialist representing Queens, has been pushing what he calls a “pied-à-terre” tax — a fancy French term for going after people who own apartments they don’t live in full-time.

The hearing went ahead without him anyway, and it didn’t go well for his side.

Witness after witness lined up to explain why Mamdani’s tax scheme is a disaster waiting to happen. Real estate experts, housing advocates, and everyday New Yorkers pointed out that punishing property owners won’t magically create more affordable housing. What it will do is drive investment out of the city and hurt the construction workers and maintenance staff who depend on those properties for their livelihoods.

One witness put it bluntly:

“This isn’t about helping working families find homes. This is about punishment and wealth redistribution. And the people who’ll pay the price are the same folks Assemblyman Mamdani claims to represent.”

Mamdani’s tax proposal targets luxury apartments and second homes, with the revenue supposedly going toward affordable housing. But critics say the math doesn’t add up. The city already has some of the highest property taxes in the nation. Piling on another levy won’t fix the zoning restrictions, red tape, and regulations that actually prevent new housing from being built.

What really sticks in people’s craw is that Mamdani couldn’t even be bothered to defend his own bill. He’s been all over social media grandstanding about taking on the rich and fighting for the little guy. But when it came time to actually answer questions and face scrutiny, he was nowhere to be found.

It’s classic behavior from the Democratic Socialist crowd. Big talk, no accountability.

The hearing exposed the flaws in Mamdani’s plan. Without him there to push back or clarify, opponents had free rein to point out every problem. They noted that wealthy property owners will just find workarounds or move their money elsewhere. Meanwhile, middle-class families who saved up to buy a small vacation home or help out elderly relatives could get caught in the tax net.

Another witness warned:

“This bill is written so broadly that it could hit regular people just trying to help their families. But I guess that doesn’t matter when you’re more interested in scoring political points than solving real problems.”

New York City is facing a genuine housing crisis. Rents are sky-high, inventory is low, and working families are being priced out. But instead of addressing the root causes — overregulation, endless bureaucracy, and a hostile environment for builders — politicians like Mamdani reach for the easy answer: tax the rich.

It never works. It just makes things worse.

The irony is that Mamdani’s own district is full of immigrants and working-class families who came to America chasing opportunity. They didn’t come here to be told that success should be punished. They came here to build something for themselves and their kids.

By skipping his own hearing, Mamdani sent a message loud and clear: he’s not serious about solutions. He’s serious about headlines and campaign fodder for the socialist base.

The bill may still advance through the heavily Democratic New York legislature, but this hearing showed that even in a deep-blue city, there are limits to how much nonsense people will tolerate. When you can’t even show up to defend your own ideas, maybe it’s a sign those ideas aren’t worth defending in the first place.

Wyatt Matters

This is what happens when ideology replaces common sense. Working families don’t need more taxes — they need more opportunity. If politicians can’t be bothered to show up and do the hard work of governing, maybe they shouldn’t be in office at all. Americans deserve leaders who actually solve problems, not ones who chase headlines and skip out when the going gets tough.

What is the surprise? His voter base is made up by the uninformed. They do not listen to much news. Mostly neighborhood gossip. They pay little or no taxes.
