- South Carolina remains a critical conservative stronghold as Republicans fight to maintain their grip on state leadership
South Carolina’s Republican gubernatorial primary is headed to a runoff after no candidate secured a clear majority Tuesday night. Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette and state Attorney General Alan Wilson emerged as the top two vote-getters, setting up a head-to-head battle for the GOP nomination.
The runoff will determine which Republican faces the Democrat nominee in November’s general election. South Carolina has been a reliable red state in recent election cycles, making the GOP primary the decisive contest in many statewide races.
To the great people of South Carolina: thank you. I am honored and humbled by our first-place finish. This victory would not have been possible without @realDonaldTrump's complete and total endorsement and the strong support of Gov. @henrymcmaster. Evette, who has served as lieutenant governor, brings executive branch experience to the race. Wilson, the state’s top law enforcement officer, has built his campaign around his record as attorney general.
Both candidates campaigned on conservative principles throughout the primary, emphasizing law and order, economic growth, and traditional values. The runoff will force Republicans to choose between two experienced state officials with different backgrounds in South Carolina government.
South Carolina Republicans will return to the polls for the runoff election to make their final choice. The winner will have weeks to pivot to the general election and unite the party behind their candidacy.
The Palmetto State has become increasingly important in national Republican politics, serving as an early primary state in presidential contests. State-level races like this gubernatorial contest help determine the direction of conservative policy across the Southeast.
Why It Matters
South Carolina Republicans now face a clear choice between two proven conservatives. This runoff will shape the future of one of America’s most reliably conservative states, and working families across the state deserve leaders who will fight for their values, protect their freedoms, and stand up to the liberal agenda threatening traditional Southern culture.
