- An emotional moment between Iyo Sky and Asuka has fans wondering if we’ve seen the last of the legendary Japanese superstar in WWE.
- TNA’s Leon Slater is poised to break a 14-year championship record this week, proving independent wrestling still produces world-class talent.
WWE’s Backlash premium live event delivered high stakes and major moments that have the wrestling world buzzing. Jacob Fatu took on Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship in a hard-hitting battle that saw Reigns retain his title. But what happened after the final bell tells a bigger story.
Fatu launched a vicious post-match assault on Reigns, sending a clear message that this rivalry is far from over. The beatdown was brutal enough to make fans wonder if we’re witnessing the beginning of a major power shift in WWE’s hierarchy.
Trick Williams defended his United States Championship against Sami Zayn in a match that had outside interference from rapper Lil Yachty. Williams proved he’s no fluke champion, holding onto his title despite the distraction tactics.
The bizarre tag team match between Danhausen and his mystery partner against The Miz and Kit Wilson took a strange turn. The mystery partner turned out to be “Mini-hausen,” who emerged from a so-called cloning machine. Multiple Mini-hausens appeared throughout the match to help Danhausen, who ultimately pinned The Miz for the victory.
Bron Breakker scored one of the biggest wins of his young career by defeating Seth Rollins. Breakker connected with a devastating torpedo spear to put away the former world champion in a hard-fought contest.
The match that stole the show came between Iyo Sky and Asuka. These two put on what many are calling the match of the night, settling bad blood that had been building for weeks. Asuka had previously attacked Sky with her signature poison mist, painting her face in a confrontation before Backlash.
Sky got her revenge where it mattered most. She hit two Bullet Train Attacks and finished Asuka with an Over the Moonsault for the three count. When Asuka tried to blind Sky with poison mist during the match, Sky used Wade Barrett’s notebook as a shield to block the attack.
What happened after the bell has everyone talking. Asuka broke down in tears as she and Sky embraced in the center of the ring. Before the match, Asuka posted a cryptic photo of herself staring out a window, fueling speculation about her future.
Sky later posted a heartfelt message on social media about their match.
“Our story comes to its final chapter with today’s match. The moment the match ended, my heart was filled with all sorts of emotions.”
She continued:
“Meeting ASUKA-san, Spending the same time together, Being able to learn so much up close — These are irreplaceable treasures to me. Thank you so much ASUKA-San. We love you ASUKA-San.”
The emotional display didn’t look like a permanent goodbye, but it certainly felt like a major turning point for the Japanese wrestling legend.
All Elite Wrestling took a major risk Saturday night with its “Fairway to Hell” special at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The one-hour event was held at an indoor golf facility, with the wrestling ring set up right in the middle of greenery and sand traps.
The gamble paid off big time. Darby Allin defended the AEW World Championship against Pac in a match that featured stunning visuals, including Allin being thrown into a bunker and tossed off the second deck. Mark Davis became the new AEW National Champion by defeating Jack Perry.
The unique venue created unforgettable moments that have fans demanding AEW return to the facility for future events.
Total Nonstop Action Wrestling has a potential record-breaker on its hands this week. Leon Slater faces Cedric Alexander for the X Division Championship on Thursday’s “Impact” broadcast. If Slater wins, he’ll become the longest-reigning X Division Champion in TNA history.
Austin Aries currently holds the record at 298 days after winning the title at No Surrender 2011. Slater won his championship at Slammiversary in July 2025 and has been on a dominant run ever since.
Aries responded to Slater approaching his record on social media.
“Big fan of @LEONSLATER_ and I have no doubt he will surpass my record, but he will also do it having never stepped in the ring with me. Number of days is great, but quantity ≠ quality.”
Wrestling fans know quality when they see it, and Slater has proven he belongs among the elite.
Mason Rook has been with WWE NXT for just two weeks, but he’s already making bold moves. After NXT Champion Tony D’Angelo defeated Tavion Heights in a non-title match Tuesday night, Rook attacked D’Angelo from behind.
Rook lifted D’Angelo over his shoulders and drove him into Heights, who was seated in the corner. Standing tall over both men, Rook made his intentions crystal clear.
“My name is Mason Rook and I’ve arrived in NXT,” he told the camera.
Rook built his reputation in Progress Wrestling as the Progress Atlas Champion and worked the independent circuit in Britain and Pro Wrestling Noah in Japan. He’s bringing that international experience to WWE’s developmental brand with immediate impact.
“Like I said, Mason Rook has arrived in NXT. And if you didn’t know, now you know.”
Even WWE legend John Cena showed support for the newcomer on social media.
AEW’s Double or Nothing on May 24 at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York, is shaping up to be a massive event. Darby Allin and Maxwell Jacob Friedman are finalizing details for a hair vs. title match for the AEW World Championship. MJF is expected to sign the match contract on “Dynamite” to keep his title shot alive.
The card is already stacked, and this high-stakes stipulation match adds even more intrigue.
Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide announced major news alongside WWE’s Backlash event. The company will host its premiere event, TripleMania, over two nights in September for the first time in the promotion’s history. Night one takes place September 11 at a location to be announced. Night two happens September 13 at Mexico City Arena.
This marks the 34th TripleMania in company history and signals AAA’s continued growth in the international wrestling market.
