President Trump said America should have tested NATO’s promise by asking the alliance to defend the southern border. He wrote that protecting the border could free up Border Patrol agents for other work.

“Maybe we should have put NATO to the test: Invoked Article 5, and forced NATO to come here and protect our Southern Border from further Invasions of Illegal Immigrants, thus freeing up large numbers of Border Patrol Agents for other tasks,” he wrote.

Trump’s remarks follow his doubts about whether NATO would help the US if needed. He also announced after meeting NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte that a new “framework” for a future deal on Greenland could benefit both America and NATO members.

Rutte agreed with Trump, calling him “totally right” on the importance of keeping the Arctic safe from Russia and China. He praised Trump’s push for higher defense spending, saying Europe and Canada now vow to spend 5% of GDP on defense, an increase from the old 2% commitment.

This deal is seen as a shift to make NATO stronger and ensure America’s interests don’t come last. Some tariffs on goods from nations posting troops to Greenland are now off the table due to this progress.
