January 1, FDA Recall Alert: Jolly Rancher Popsicles Pose Severe Allergy Risk
As Starbucks rolls out its Pumpkin Spice Latte, signaling the end of summer, we find ourselves still savoring some warm-weather staples like the beloved ice cream truck. Yet, beware, patriots: a recent recall could impact those nostalgic treats.
On Aug. 21, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of approximately 137,000 cases of Popsicle Jolly Rancher Frozen Confection Pops. The reason? Unilever discovered that these popsicles might contain undeclared “milk allergens,” posing serious health risks to those with milk allergies.
These Jolly Rancher Green Apple Blue Raspberry Grape popsicles were being sold across the nation in ice cream trucks and concession stands, making their way to consumers between Feb. 1 and Aug. 15. While only two allergic reactions have been reported, the FDA advises anyone who has bought these treats to avoid consuming them and contact their healthcare provider if they have concerns.
Unilever urges caution and advises disposing of the product, even if you don’t have a milk allergy, to prevent any risk to those who do. The company stresses the gravity of allergic reactions, noting that “people with severe sensitivity to milk could experience life-threatening outcomes.”
If you’re unsure whether your popsicles are part of the recall, check the universal product code (UPC) 077567003720 beneath the barcode, and look for the lot code on the bottom of the wrapper. A comprehensive list of affected lot codes is available in the FDA notice.
To get a reimbursement, Unilever asks customers to submit a photo of the UPC and lot code through their recall page. Confirmation will be sent via email, and reimbursement should arrive within eight to ten weeks.
Still craving your favorite frozen treat? It’s essential to know that the recall doesn’t affect other Unilever or Popsicle-brand products, including the 18-count multi-packs found in grocery stores. Unilever assures that they are taking corrective actions with their supplier to prevent such issues in the future.
Remember, patriots: always stay informed and vigilant about what you consume. For additional information, contact Unilever’s Support Team at 888-926-3554, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. EST.
