Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE) was convicted of three felony charges stemming from lying to the FBI, prompting calls for his resignation from both Democrats and Republicans.

“I think when someone’s convicted, it’s time to resign,” said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

“He had his day in court. I think if he wants to appeal, he can go do that as a private citizen.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi echoed McCarthy’s calls in a statement.

“Congressman Fortenberry’s conviction represents a breach of the public trust and confidence in his ability to serve. No one is above the law,” Pelosi said.

“Congressman Fortenberry must resign from the House.”

The Hill noted that if Fortenberry decides to forgo resignation, he could be subject to disciplinary action up to and including formal expulsion from Congress.
