On May 5th, 1961, history was made as astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American to journey into space. This monumental event, known as the Mercury-Redstone 3 mission or Freedom 7, marked the beginning of the United States’ manned space exploration program and propelled the nation into the Space Age.

Alan Shepard, a decorated Navy test pilot, was chosen by NASA to be part of the Mercury 7 group, a select group of astronauts.
