Wyatt’s Take

  • The Seahawks are officially on the market after their Super Bowl win.
  • Paul Allen’s estate is selling the team just like he wanted.
  • Proceeds from the sale will go to charity, keeping with Allen’s wishes.

The Seattle Seahawks are being put up for sale following the wishes of late owner Paul Allen. This news comes just after the team claimed their second Super Bowl title.

The estate of Allen confirmed that they have begun the process of selling the team. Investment bank Allen & Company along with law firm Latham & Watkins will handle the transaction, which is expected to continue into the next offseason. League owners will need to approve the final deal before it becomes official.

“The Estate of Paul G. Allen today announced it has commenced a formal sale process for the Seattle Seahawks NFL franchise, consistent with Allen’s directive to eventually sell his sports holdings and direct all Estate proceeds to philanthropy.”

Paul Allen bought the Seahawks in 1997 for $194 million from Ken Behring. His sister, Jody, has managed the team and the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers since Allen’s passing in 2018 from non-Hodgkin lymphoma at age 65. Last September, the estate agreed to sell the Trail Blazers to a group led by NHL owner Tom Dundon.

Whoever picks up the Seahawks next will have big shoes to fill—and a championship team to lead.

If this kind of big league money ever landed in your pocket, would you buy a team?
