Wyatt’s Take

  • The Padres had their chance to prove they belonged with the big boys but folded under pressure when it counted.
  • Milwaukee’s pitching staff showed the kind of grit and discipline that wins championships while San Diego’s bats went missing at the worst time.
  • Heartland fans know the story: when you don’t show up to play every inning, you end up watching from the couch.

The San Diego Padres baseball season ended in disappointment Wednesday night as the Milwaukee Brewers shut them down at Petco Park.

Game 4 finished with a 3-1 final score that sent Milwaukee to the next round and left San Diego packing up early.

The Padres loaded the bases early but failed to score when Xander Bogaerts popped out with two outs in the first inning.

Milwaukee took advantage two innings later when Garrett Mitchell drove in a run to give the Brewers the lead.

Fernando Tatis Jr. answered with a solo home run in the third that tied the game at 1-1 and gave San Diego fans a moment of hope.

That turned out to be the last hit of the night for the Padres offense.

The bats went completely silent for the final six innings as Milwaukee pitchers kept San Diego hitters guessing.

Jackson Chourio and Sal Frelick added key runs for the Brewers to stretch their lead to 3-1.

Brewers reliever Aaron Ashby shut down the Padres lineup completely over three scoreless innings.

The turning point came in the eighth inning when Manny Machado drove a ball deep to center field at 107 miles per hour.

The ball looked like it would tie the game, but Garrett Mitchell tracked it down and made a leaping catch at the wall to rob the home run.

Trevor Megill finished the job in the ninth by striking out the side to seal the victory and send Milwaukee forward.

Wyatt Matters

Hard work and finishing what you start still matter most, whether you’re on the baseball field or working an honest job. When teams or individuals give less than their best when the stakes are highest, the result is always the same disappointment.
