January 1, Why a Supreme Court Justice Apologized to a Trump Appointee

Wyatt’s Take

  • Sotomayor admitted her remarks about Kavanaugh were inappropriate and hurtful.
  • The dispute grew out of a court ruling on immigration enforcement in Los Angeles.
  • The Trump administration argued judges should not micromanage officers in the field.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor issued a rare apology after criticizing the background of her conservative colleague Justice Brett Kavanaugh. She had questioned whether he understood the lives of hourly workers during a speech at a law school.

Sotomayor said Kavanaugh’s reasoning showed a disconnect from regular people because his parents were professionals.

“This is from a man whose parents were professionals. And probably doesn’t really know any person who works by the hour.”

The liberal justice later walked back those comments and confirmed she apologized to Kavanaugh directly. The case at the center of the fight involved the Supreme Court’s conservative majority lifting limits on immigration sweeps.

The Trump administration told the court that officers need flexibility to do their jobs without lower-court restrictions. Sotomayor had dissented from that decision before taking her frustrations public.

Wyatt Matters

Middle Americans respect hard work and fair play, not personal attacks over family background. It is good to see a justice admit when she crossed the line into insult.

In any debate, when your opponent has nothing more of merit to offer, no facts pertinent to the issues or topic, the standard MO is ALWAYS to resort to denigration of your opponent and juvenile name-calling.

Sotomayor is yet another Obama failure this country will spend years trying to recover from – appointed purely because she is “not white”, nothing to do with her professionalism, intelligence, or concern for this country, which is so obviously, blatantly lacking. Honestly, she should step down.

      That is 100% true.

Sound to me like she doesn’t want to become the first Supreme Court Justice accused of/prosecuted for Slander!! You would think a sitting judge, let alone a SUPREME COURT JUSTICE, would understand the concept of slander a little better…. AND understand you don’t air your dirty laundry in public! My personal opinion…. time to step down. You’ve shown your true colors and bias and EVERYONE now knows it. You have lost ALL credibility and need to remove yourself from such an important position.
