Wyatt’s Take

  • A New Hampshire wedding venue floor gave way during the celebration, sending guests into the basement below.
  • About 70 people were affected, and six were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
  • Investigators are now looking at whether overcrowding and building code issues played a role.

A New Hampshire wedding turned into a nightmare when the floor gave way under the guests.

Nearly 70 people plunged into the basement during the celebration last Saturday.

Authorities say the venue was likely over capacity when the timber gave out.

Now, investigators are looking at building codes to see how this happened.

The floor collapsed into a 20-by-20-foot opening.

Officials estimate 144 people were inside the building.

The incident occurred at a venue called The Preserve at Chocorua during a ceremony in the Sap House building.

Reports indicate over 100 people were standing on the floor when it failed.

Guests were reportedly trapped under beams and farming equipment in the basement after the fall.

Local fire crews and the State Fire Marshal responded to the emergency call.

“We’re very fortunate that more people didn’t get seriously injured out here tonight.”

State Fire Marshal Sean P. Toomey praised the quick actions of the venue staff and fellow guests.

They provided first aid before the ambulances could reach the rural scene.

Four of those taken to the hospital have already been released.

No deaths were reported despite the terrifying height of the fall.

Wyatt Matters

When a venue ignores basic capacity and safety concerns, ordinary families pay the price. Communities deserve common-sense standards that keep guests safe before the celebration turns into a rescue.

My daughter-in-law, from Chicago, insisted on a barn venue in rural Ohio for her & my son’s wedding. I grew on a dairy farm. Barns are for animals, not people. The dinner was on a dirt floor in the lower area. I was disgusted. She later said she hated her wedding!

This place looks like a dump
People are so stupid. They rather get married in a dump then in a nice venue because I think it’s cool.

Old wooden buildings with basements may not be the best place to host events.

The pictures show the cause. Support beam spacing is 24″. Broken floor area is 10’x 10′ Weight support calculation is 40Lbs per square ft. 70 person load in this area is 115.5 per square ft. Residential ocupancies are built to floor load of 120lbs per square ft. For this area the beams would be 12″ spaceing 2″x 10″ beams. Picture shows floor area built 90 degrees to original structure. Notice saw cut floor planking. Area was built to Balcony, Pier, roof or attic floor load of 40 lbs per square ft. Balconie, piers, and flat roofs suffer the higest degree of structural failure. Common structural failure is caused by overload of too many people. Stuctural failure was engineering predictable for the use of the stucture. A competant buisness use inspector would have never issued a bussness use permit for an Attic floor area!
