Virginia Democrats are pushing a major constitutional amendment so they can redraw U.S. House districts ahead of the normal schedule. They hope to get this change approved by voters in a referendum this April, which could hand Democrats control of more seats.

The amendment cleared the General Assembly with only Democrats in support, as the Senate passed it after the House did earlier in the week.

Right now, a bipartisan commission draws the congressional maps just once every ten years after the federal census, a plan approved by voters in 2020. But under this new proposal, the legislature could skip that commission and redraw lines early if states like Texas or North Carolina do the same.

Democrats say this is their answer to Republican-led redistricting in other states, giving them a chance to shape the map to their advantage.
