January 1, UN Flags Iran’s Growing Uranium Threat as Israel Strikes

Wyatt’s Take

  • Iran boosted its uranium stockpile just before Israel attacked in June.
  • The uranium is nearly weapons-grade, and the UN can’t verify new amounts.
  • Iran stopped working with inspectors after the strikes.

The United Nations’ nuclear watchdog said Iran increased its stockpile of uranium close to weapons-grade right before Israel’s military acted in June. As of June 13, Iran had built up 972 pounds of uranium enriched up to 60 percent—just a step below what’s needed for a bomb.

That’s 71.2 pounds more than what was reported the month before. The agency says these amounts come from Iran’s own records and their limited checks between mid-May and mid-June, just before the attacks started.

If Iran keeps enriching, it’s very close to having what it needs for nuclear weapons, which could rattle an already dangerous region.

Since its nuclear sites were hit, Iran has cut off cooperation with the UN inspectors. The report said, “technical modalities to enable the full resumption of Agency inspection should be concluded without delay.” Inspectors have not been able to check or verify Iran’s nuclear material since mid-June.
