Wyatt’s Take

  • Ukraine may turn part of Donetsk into a “free economic zone” if Russia pulls its troops.
  • This move hinges on approval from Russia and would start a full ceasefire.
  • The deal, backed by Trump’s plan, aims for lasting peace in the region.

Ukraine is signaling it might create a demilitarized zone in the Donetsk region, offering a path toward peace if Russia agrees to withdraw its own forces.

This proposal falls within an updated peace plan built largely on groundwork laid by President Trump’s administration.

President Zelensky said he’s open to this arrangement only if Russia reciprocates and both sides formally approve.

“There are two options: either the war continues, or something will have to be decided regarding all potential economic zones,” Zelensky said.

He added that core parts of the agreement have been settled by both sides. If Russia goes along and later breaks the deal, global sanctions would return.

If both countries’ parliaments sign off, fighting could stop immediately under the plan. It also pushes Russia to pledge non-aggression and allows Ukraine to move toward joining the European Union.

Recent talks in Miami between Trump administration officials and Russian and Ukrainian negotiators helped set the stage for this possibility.

Stay tuned as we watch these talks unfold and hope for some sanity and real progress toward peace.
