January 1, UK Police Roll Out Drones for Trump Visit
Wyatt’s Take
- Security is top priority for Trump’s UK visit
- Police deploy drones and heavy patrols around Windsor
- Stronger measures after recent violence targeting politicians
British cops are going all out to protect President Trump during his visit to Windsor Castle. Folks in the area will see drones in the sky and extra police everywhere as the visit kicks off.
The Thames Valley Police, pulling in resources from across the board, say it’s one of their largest drone operations yet. “There will be policing drone tactics that the public will see, as well as policing drone tactics that the public won’t see,” said Inspector Matthew Wilkinson, making it clear they’re not cutting corners on safety.
Starting Tuesday, police are shutting down airspace and locking down the area—on land, water, and air—through Thursday, as Trump meets with King Charles III and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Police aren’t saying how this compares to security for past events, but local reports say it’s on the same scale as the King’s coronation.
Extra precautions also reach Chequers, the prime minister’s country home northwest of Windsor. “These restrictions apply to all aircraft, including drones, and are designed to support the safe delivery of the visit while minimizing disruption to the local community,” the police said in a statement.
Alongside the drone team, armed officers and search units have been deployed, searching every nook and cranny around Windsor. Sergeant Amber Timmis noted, “We will be searching everywhere to make sure everything is secure, before the event begins.” He added, “These searches are routine, but they are also important, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we carry out our security operation.” Police on horseback are also patrolling during the three-day event.
Though UK police say these steps are standard, it’s clear nerves are high following a string of violent attacks against political figures—most recently the fatal shooting of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk in Utah, along with murders and attacks on lawmakers in the past year and a recent attempt on Trump’s life.
“Standard” or not, British police say they’re doing everything possible to keep everyone safe while Trump is in town, given the times we’re living in.
