Two extremists in England were convicted Tuesday for planning a violent attack on Manchester’s Jewish community. Police say the attack would have caused huge tragedy if it hadn’t been stopped in time.

Prosecutors revealed to the Preston Crown Court that the men aimed to copy the 2015 Paris attacks that left 130 dead.

According to law enforcement, Walid Saadaoui and Amar Hussein bought weapons to use in a suicide strike. An undercover officer testified that Saadaoui talked about killing “young, old, women, elderly, the whole lot, killing them all.” Christians were also potential targets.

The men were arrested in a sting operation as Saadaoui tried to obtain the weapons for their planned assault.

Rob Potts from Greater Manchester Police said if their plan had succeeded, it could have been “the deadliest terrorist attack in U.K. history.”

The plot was meant as revenge for Israeli military action in Gaza.
