A Washington store owner allegedly stole over $600,000 from taxpayers through a clever EBT scheme.
Authorities claim Manjit Bedi charged double for food and handed out half that amount in cash to keep the change.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd noted that every dollar lost to this kind of greed hurts children and families who actually need the help.
“Every assistance dollar lost to fraud is a dollar that could be feeding hungry children,”
Floyd stated.
This case follows a broader push by the Trump administration to clean up federal benefit programs that have been plagued by abuse for years.
Vice President J.D. Vance is currently leading a task force aimed at rooting out this type of corruption across the entire government.
The trial for the 64-year-old shopkeeper is currently set to begin in late June of 2026.
