Wyatt’s Take

  • On his fifth deployment, he killed two enemies under fire.
  • Shot in the chest, he saved a wounded Afghan soldier first.
  • Refused treatment until his men were safe, earning a posthumous Silver Star.

Marine Staff Sergeant Charles Cartwright grew up near my hometown in Maryland. We went to the same high school, though I never met him.

He graduated in spring 2001 when I was in elementary school. Nine years later, his photo went up on our classroom wall after he died serving our country.

Cartwright joined the Marines days before 9/11 changed everything. He served three tours in Iraq and two in Afghanistan.

At 26, he left a wife married just 11 months. His medals include two Purple Hearts and three Good Conduct awards.

Now older than him when he fell, I cover this new fight with Iran. What does America demand of our young fighters?

Stand with our troops. Honor the fallen like Cartwright every day.
