January 1, Trump Warns Chicago Leaders After Crime Surge
Wyatt’s Take
- Trump blasts Illinois’s governor over Chicago crime wave.
- Pritzker and city officials push back on federal help.
- National Guard and military base could enter the mix.
President Trump sounded off against Governor Pritzker after a violent weekend in Chicago, promising federal help if Illinois doesn’t get crime under control.
Pritzker and Chicago’s mayor accused Trump of government overreach and claimed local policies are working, but Trump insisted locals want real help from Washington.
“Six people were killed, and 24 people were shot, in Chicago last weekend, and JB Pritzker, the weak and pathetic Governor of Illinois, just said that he doesn’t need help in preventing CRIME. He is CRAZY!!! He better straighten it out, FAST, or we’re coming! MAGA. President DJT,”
Trump’s post came after weeks of rising friction with Illinois officials over crime and how to handle immigration in the city. The president just used the National Guard and federal law in Washington, DC, which the White House says quickly dropped crime there.
Trump hinted Chicago could be next, labeling the city a “mess” at an Oval Office event. He said people in the city are calling out for help and promised to “straighten that one out, probably next.”
Pritzker accused the administration of “authoritarian overreach” and warned Illinois would fight any National Guard deployment. He pointed to state-driven crime drops, showing recent homicide numbers down more than 30 percent.
Mayor Brandon Johnson agreed, saying Trump’s interest shows “disdain for working people.” The city credits drops in shootings and robberies to new youth programs, mental health care, and lower-cost housing. Johnson just signed an order blocking Chicago police from helping federal immigration operations, aiming to protect people’s rights.
Trump’s team is eyeing the Great Lakes Naval Station for immigration enforcement, drawing more pushback from local and national Democrats. Some have attacked the idea as a misuse of the military.
But Trump maintains that residents in the city just want a safer life. Local figures like Dr. Willie Wilson say more law enforcement support needs to take politics out of the equation for families caught in the crossfire.
Stay tuned as Trump’s standoff with Illinois leaders puts Chicago in the national spotlight—and the fight over crime and government power heats up.
