January 1, Trump Team Targets Massive Minnesota Welfare Fraud
Wyatt’s Take
- The Trump administration is taking aim at large-scale fraud in Minnesota’s welfare programs.
- Federal officials warn they may cut off Medicaid funds if the state doesn’t clean up its act fast.
- Billions in taxpayer dollars have been lost, much of it tied to shady autism and housing schemes.
Fraud is running wild in Minnesota social programs, ringing alarm bells in D.C. as billions of taxpayer dollars vanish into the wrong hands. Federal officials say they won’t keep bailing out the state’s leadership if things don’t change—and fast.
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services boss Dr. Mehmet Oz told a national radio show that he will not tolerate the level of waste and abuse plaguing Minnesota’s programs. “If we’re unsatisfied with the state’s plans or cooperation, we’ll stop paying the federal share of these programs,” Oz warned. “The message… is clear: either fix this in 60 days or start looking under your couch for spare change, because we’re done footing the bill for your incompetence.”
Federal investigators have found massive fraud in programs for housing and autism—which should have cost millions but ended up costing hundreds of millions. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson said half of $18 billion in federal welfare sent to Minnesota since 2018 was stolen, with much of it going to fake autism cases and phony housing deals.
Oz also described how some fraudsters have been caught using their illegal gains to buy real estate and luxury cars overseas, sometimes in Somalia or Nigeria. He said this can’t continue and shut down the worst programs.
In response, Governor Tim Walz created a new program integrity office, but critics say the damage has already been done. The state’s tracking just wasn’t enough to keep thieves from taking advantage for years, especially during covid relief.
Oz says there’s a lesson for all government officials: “When you find fraud – and fraudsters are good at finding it – they’ll milk it for as long as they can. So you have to come down hard.”

Wyatt Matters
Hardworking Americans deserve to know their tax dollars are going to real families in need, not disappearing into scams and government waste. D.C. should hold every state accountable just like folks here watch every penny at home.
