Wyatt’s Take

  • The Trump administration is cracking down on illegal immigrants in federally funded housing.
  • Housing authorities nationwide have 30 days to reveal tenants’ legal status or risk losing money.
  • Leaders say Americans come first, not those here illegally.

Federal housing officials are giving public housing agencies one month to report the citizenship status of all their tenants.

Housing Secretary Scott Turner says this is about making sure illegal immigrants don’t take advantage of taxpayer-funded housing intended for Americans.

Two senior officials said many housing agencies either have not collected or have refused to share this key information.

"I bet Biden HUD didn’t do anything on collecting citizenship info since they support current [regulations] that allow illegals to be in mixed-status housing, so they wouldn’t have wanted to know those numbers in the first place," stated a HUD official.

Mixed family units include households with at least one person who is not claiming legal immigration status.

The Trump team’s letter calls for the names, addresses, and legal status of anyone living in these mixed-status homes within 30 days.

Authorities are also being told to submit data on tenants with questionable immigration status and to cough up files on anyone who gave false information about their eligibility.

Turner made it clear: "No longer will illegal aliens be able to leave citizenship boxes blank or take advantage of HUD-funded housing, riding the coattails of hardworking American citizens."

"Currently, HUD only serves one out of four eligible families due, in part, to the lack of enforcement of prohibition against federally funded assistance to illegal aliens," he added.

Washington, D.C.’s housing authority was the first to get the Trump administration’s notice, and more than 3,000 other local agencies will soon receive the same demand.

Turner warned that those who refuse to cooperate may lose federal funding or face program eligibility review.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem backed up the plan, saying the federal government is working together to stop the misuse of public benefits by illegal immigrants.

"The Biden Administration prioritized illegal aliens over our own citizens, including by giving illegal aliens taxpayer-funded housing at the expense of Americans. Not anymore. If you are an illegal immigrant, you should leave now. The gravy train is over," Noem declared.

If you believe our housing help should serve citizens first, keep an eye on how this crackdown unfolds.
