  • Trump orders National Guard out of Los Angeles, Chicago, and Portland.
  • Supreme Court blocks federal control in Chicago deployment.
  • Local leaders express mixed reactions to troop withdrawal.

President Trump says National Guard troops will leave Los Angeles, Chicago, and Portland after seeing crime drop in those cities. He called the Guardsmen “great Patriots” and claimed their presence brought much-needed order.

Local leaders didn’t like the deployments and pushed for the troops to leave. Trump criticized them, calling their actions incompetent even with clear progress on the ground.

“It’s hard to believe that these Democrat Mayors and Governors, all of whom are greatly incompetent, would want us to leave, especially considering the great progress that has been made?” Trump posted.

A Supreme Court decision on December 23 stopped Trump from keeping Guard troops in Chicago for immigration enforcement. The justices said the federal government hasn’t proved it can use the military for this under current law.

Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Neil Gorsuch wrote that they disagreed with the order. Illinois and Chicago officials had taken the federal government to court over the deployments, questioning the White House’s authority to use the troops under emergency rules.

The Supreme Court noted that border enforcement in cities like Chicago faces resistance and even violence. But justices said laws only allow the President to use the National Guard when the regular military cannot enforce federal law.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta was happy to see the Guard leave and said, “For six months, California National Guard troops have been used as political pawns by a President desperate to be king.” He added, “There is a reason our founders decided military and civilian affairs must be kept separate; a reason that our military is, by design, apolitical.”
