President Trump has taken action to make sure America isn’t caught flat-footed when it comes to important medicines. He ordered health officials to list out 26 must-have drugs, then fill up a national stockpile with the ingredients needed to make them.

The goal here is simple—keep our medical supply chain strong so we don’t have to worry about shortages, especially if other countries hold the keys to what we need.

The order tells officials to gather a six-month supply of these ingredients, with a real push to buy American-made whenever possible. They’re storing these at what’s called the SAPIR, a kind of national safety net for drug ingredients.

Trump wants a backup plan too. He said they should look into adding a second SAPIR site.

Recent talk from Dr. Jay Bhattacharya shines a light on how much we’ve been leaning on China and India for our medicine needs.

“So much of our manufacturing for drugs relies on the Chinese manufacturing, on Indian manufacturing,” Bhattacharya said. “And it leaves the United States in a very vulnerable place, where if you have a crisis, even when you don’t have a crisis, when there’s just normal demands for vital medical items, antibiotics, I already mentioned, normal saline. All of that is just normal demand.”

He warns that shortages are already being felt because America doesn’t make enough at home.
