  • Providence officials want a mural honoring Iryna Zarutska removed after calling it divisive.
  • The portrait became a flashpoint over crime, public safety, and how victims are remembered.
  • State Sen. Jessica de la Cruz blasted the move as censorship of a simple memorial.

Providence politicians are demanding the removal of a mural honoring Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee murdered by a repeat offender. Mayor Brett Smiley called the memorial divisive because its funding was linked to figures like Elon Musk.

Zarutska was stabbed to death on a light rail train by a man with 14 prior arrests. Leftist officials claim the art does not reflect city values while they continue to celebrate memorials for career criminals.

The artist intended to humanize the victim, but local Democrats labeled the portrait a right-wing provocation.

City leaders are erasing victims who expose the failures of liberal safety policies.

The Dark Lady, the club where the mural was painted, apologized and agreed to scrub the image.

State Senator Jessica de la Cruz criticized the move as blatant censorship of a simple portrait of a human being.

“The First Amendment exists to protect expression like this, even when it’s uncomfortable. Ordering it removed isn’t leadership. It’s censorship.”
