Wyatt’s Take

  • George Conway, once a Trump supporter, now runs as a Democrat in New York.
  • He joins a crowded primary to replace longtime Rep. Jerry Nadler.
  • The district is a safe Democrat seat, drawing big names.

George Conway, a former conservative lawyer known for criticizing President Trump, has filed to run as a Democrat in New York’s 12th congressional district. The district, which covers Manhattan, is considered a guaranteed win for Democrats.

Nadler has represented the district since 1992 but is retiring as older Democrats face calls to step aside for a younger generation. Conway’s entry adds to an already crowded primary field.

Once active in conservative legal circles and involved in the Paula Jones case against President Clinton, Conway later made headlines by opposing Trump—despite his marriage to former Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway. The two divorced in March 2023.

Conway also helped launch the Lincoln Project, a group of Republicans working against Trump.

The Federal Election Commission lists his campaign as registered in New York City. His campaign website is not yet active.

At least 12 candidates are interested in the seat, including JFK’s grandson Jack Schlossberg, activist Cameron Kasky, and several local New York politicians. The Democratic primary will be highly competitive.
