Wyatt’s Take

  • Trump says he’d consider reopening asylums for the severely mentally ill on America’s streets.
  • He blames the closure of these facilities for rising public safety risks.
  • His campaign wants to bring back mental institutions to treat and reintegrate troubled individuals.

Former President Trump shared that he’s open to bringing back mental institutions for those struggling with severe mental illness and living on the streets.

He explained that many old asylums, especially in places like New York and California, were shut down due to high costs, forcing patients out into public life.

“Yeah I would,” Trump answered when asked about reopening these facilities.

Trump remembered growing up in New York, listing places like Creedmoor and Bellevue that once held many patients. “They released them all into society because they couldn’t afford it. You know, it’s massively expensive,” he said.

He warned of the potential dangers from leaving untreated mentally ill people without care. “Because, you can’t have these people walking around,” Trump added. “So dangerous, so dangerous. And they can live to be 85 years old.”

Trump also talked about his efforts to tackle crime in Washington, D.C., using the National Guard and not ruling out federal help for other cities facing similar issues.

His campaign plan calls for new mental institutions to help treat and eventually reintegrate those who are most severely troubled.
